CHR Laments 'Continued Occurrences' of Red-Tagging, Media Killings
The Commission on Human Rights (CHR) has expressed deep concern over the persistent issues of red-tagging, enforced disappearances, and attacks on journalists in the Philippines.
Key Concerns Raised by the CHR
The CHR highlighted the following alarming trends:
- Red-Tagging: The labeling of individuals and organizations as communist or terrorist sympathizers, often without due process, leading to harassment and violence.
- Enforced Disappearances: The abduction and disappearance of individuals, often linked to political activism or dissent.
- Media Killings: The assassination of journalists, hindering freedom of the press and access to information.
- Arbitrary Detention: The unlawful imprisonment of individuals without proper legal justification.
- Vilification of Human Rights Defenders: The smearing and discrediting of individuals and groups working to protect human rights.
CHR's Call to Action
The CHR urges the government to take immediate action to:
- Investigate and prosecute perpetrators of red-tagging, enforced disappearances, and media killings.
- Ensure the safety and protection of journalists, human rights defenders, and other vulnerable groups.
- Promote a culture of respect for human rights and the rule of law.
