Remembering Shostakovich in York

The year was 1972. The air in York crackled with anticipation. Little did the young members of the Fitzwilliam Quartet know that they were about to embark on what they would later describe as "the two most memorable days of my entire professional life."

Meeting Shostakovich in person was an experience that profoundly impacted their understanding of his music and their approach to performance. They recall his quiet intensity, his insightful comments, and the palpable connection he had with his work. This encounter shaped their interpretation of String Quartet No. 13 and countless other pieces.
