The Initial Disappointment: BMI as a Barrier

Early in her pregnancy, Tara Sawyer received the disheartening news that Angliss Hospital, her local facility, wouldn't be able to accommodate her due to her higher BMI. She was directed to Box Hill Hospital instead. "Because of my higher BMI, you automatically have to go to Box Hill rather than Angliss Hospital," says the 29-year-old from Emerald.

A Blessing in Disguise: Finding the Right Program

What initially felt like a setback turned into a "blessing in disguise." Tara was connected with a specialized program designed for women facing similar challenges. This program provided comprehensive maternity care tailored to her specific needs, focusing on both her physical and emotional well-being.

The Importance of Supportive Maternity Care

Tara's story underscores the critical importance of accessible and supportive maternity care for all women, regardless of their weight. It highlights the need to address weight stigma within the healthcare system and provide individualized care that promotes positive birth outcomes.
